Summary: You'll need tissues!
Comment: I loved this book! Most of the book made me laugh. A few family tragedies broke up the laughter, but for the most part, the madcap, typical dumb-as-rocks-Lab behavior of Marley had me smiling and remembering my own 104 pounds of black Lab insanity, Cody. The end is what really got to me because, of course, dogs don't live nearly long enough. Grogan's brief but powerful touch on dealing with the loss of a pet had silent tears rolling down my cheeks with the memories of loosing my precious Doberman to a vet's life-ending needle due to illness that I couldn't fix and suffering that had to be ended. This book will resound with newlyweds, parents, people who love a good laugh, and of course, that very special breed in itself, the dog lover/chew-toy/doormat for their very own four-legged 'child.'

Summary: This book is heartwarming!!
Comment: I truly believe in the friendship and loyalty of a dog, so reading this book only made me love my dog even more! I appreciated the warmth of the Grogan family, the hardships they dealt with and the good times as well. Marley is truly a great dog, one of the best "bad" dogs! This book clarified the fact that dogs are going to be our best friends forever. I was laughing and crying throughout the book!

Besides the fact that I am a dog lover, this book made me think more about my own friendships and loyalty and how they have shaped my life.

Summary: I loved this book.
Comment: I wish I could describe how much I adored this book. The descriptions of Marley were laugh-out-loud funny and the honesty and openess in sharing difficult times within the family made the story so real.
I felt very connected to the author. I have often held my dog and just breathed in the smell and the warmth of him. Mr Grogan clearly loved this dog fiercely and unashamedly, and any of us who also do, can feel the depth of his love. I thank him for sharing the story of Marley. He may not have been a good dog, but he was the best!

Summary: Wonderful Book All The Way Through! A+++
Comment: I thoroughly enjoyed reading Marley and Me, and had to admire the patience of John Grogan and his wife Jennifer for putting up with so many of this dog's behaviors! Marley was a real stinker, and from the time he was a little puppy, he ate everything in sight of him, and tore up the house many a time. Leaving him alone was a fearsome idea. Often when John and his family returned, they would find the house and the garage a complete disaster.

Also Marley was one of the few dogs that never responded in obedience school-at all. Most trainers became very disgusted with him and kicked him out of class. It was a very long time before he came to obey any command at all. The dog totally had a mind of his own.

Marley was very docile however, around children. When John and Jennifer began having their children, Marley was always protective of both of them all the time. And of course, the kids loved the dog as much as he loved them.

This is a great biography also in that it is not only centered on Marley, but on John and his growing family as well. So it makes for a very interesting family saga.

Summary: SAD DOG AND STUPID OWNERS
Comment: I love animals and hate to see them mistreated as Marley was mistreated. This dog was not meant to live in a garage and a house with a small yard. If the owners loved this dog as they professed, they would have sold/given him to some one who had a farm or at least lots of land where the hyper dog could not
get into so much trouble. The owners thought only of themselves and had no
real feelings for this poor animal who was not the brightest light on the Christmas Tree. To ever assume they could train him to be a "house pet" was so
stupid I can't even think of the words to describe their actions. And if it was not
bad enough to keep this poor animal confined, they then bring babies into the
world. Can't imagine how the children will turn out.......hopefully not like either stupid parent. I have read parts of the book and find it to be disgusting.

Editorial Reviews:

The heartwarming and unforgettable
story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught
them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.
