Summary: Just a beautiful collection to own
Comment: Despite owning all the larger Calvin & Hobbes compilations (The Days Are Just Packed, It's a Magical World, etc) when I saw The Complete Collection I knew I just had to have it.

Three large wonderfully bound books full of every Calvin & Hobbes strip PLUS the dates of when each and every one of the individual strips were created, this is something any fan will enjoy. If you're like me you will get a kick out of seeing what strip was written on your birthday. Andrews McMeel Publishing haven't spared any detail with this set and Bill Watterson has a great foreword in the beginning of the first volume. They haven't spared much expense either with every page being quality grade paper making every turn a pleasure. The books are hard bound and appear strongly constructed so they should stand the test of time although I will still handle my set with the greatest of care.

My tiny criticism (but I still award five stars!) is that putting all the works of Bill into three separate volumes makes for some very heavy books. This can be countered by the fact that if you read in bed at night, like I do, then you will soon have a stomach of rippling steel from supporting the weight! As a note it may also be a set you don't want to have kicking around the coffee table as it really just begs to be cared for and cherished for a very long time. Mind you, I wouldn't spend this kind of money not to look after it!

If you are a big fan of Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes then you must, must have The Complete Collection.

Summary: Doesn't Get Any Better
Comment: This is an outstanding comic strip all the way around. From the writing to the artwork, Watterson is perfect. From the opening panel to the last, this strip was genius. Many of the great newspaper comics take a few years to hit their stride, or even worse, they stay around way too long and tarnish what they have built. Though I miss Calvin and Hobbes, I am glad that Watterson left the strip while on top and he did it his way. This is a beautiful collection reproduced with great care. Personally I like my old collection of paperbacks to spend a lazy Sunday reading over. These hardcover editions make me too concerned about maintaining the near mint quality than enjoying them. But that is why I have both.

Summary: nope, thank you. I won't have another bite
Comment: I used to be fond of that comic strip as it was released daily in your paper.
but 15 years or so later, it looks like the strip really lacks diversity. it always gets back to a very limited amount of key issues or gags and over 25 pounds later (it's heavy not only because of its completeness but also because the publisher obviously picked the heaviest stock available) you're getting bored of the same situation coming over and over again.
not to mention the average job the publisher did at designing the set.
you might want to stick to your old soft paperbacks.

Summary: An absolute delight...!
Comment: I was a devoted "Calvin & Hobbes" reader from the start of the series to the sad but sweet end... In college, I even read the strip on the air when I did the news for our college station, and dutifully collected the various reprint books, and read the strip religiously over the years.

This fabulent three-volume collection has tons of stuff I either never saw or don't remember seeing when it first came out. It's a delight... "Calvin & Hobbes" is every bit as great as I remember... better even! The eight-pound weight of each volume makes these books a bit difficult to read, but it sure is a classy package. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Summary: Huge fan bows down to Watterson
Comment: As a newspaper addict I doubt I missed very many Calvin and Hobbes and man do I miss not getting my daily dose!!!

I received these books as a Christmas present and what an awesome present it is, I'm still reading the first book though I admit I skimmed through the others to write this review. Anyone who loved Calvin and Hobbes would be most grateful for the complete set in such a high quality format so it'll last a lifetime.

What's amazing about reviewing the complete works is how little development of the strip occurred, Watterson comes out sprinting, with the first strips comparing favorably to the last strips - all providing plenty of belly laughs for those that love these guys.

Only Gary Larsen's Far Side is equal to the quality Watterson presents. As much as I enjoy Dilbert, it misses way more than Watterson's Calvin in both insights and entertainment value.

While I doubt I'd spend this money on myself (preferring to buy one at a time), I sure enjoyed the gift of getting all.

Calvin remains a personal hero. . . Thanks Mr. Watterson for helping me to stay young at heart!!!

Editorial Reviews:

An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction:

"I’ve loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don’t even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--verything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It’s a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer."
