Summary: Waste of money
Comment: I have two of these in my backyard - and the moles are tunneling all over the place. My whole lot is 1/3 acre, so coverage is not an issue - they are tunneling within 20 feet of both of them.

I have them placed in heavy soil - and they have not kept moles away at all. I have resorted to traps to get rid of the moles.

Save your money. Huge disappointment.

Summary: Moles love it
Comment: I bought this and it seemed to work fine for about 2 months in a small front yard. Then the moles came and actually TUNNELED RIGHT PAST IT!
This is a waste of money.

Summary: My story
Comment: I have 2 acres with heavily forested edges that I gladly share with a wide variety of wildlife. I have a huge mole problem in the grassy area in the middle. I bought two of these units and placed them in the areas of worst infestation. Imagine my thrill the next morning when I saw 3 mole trails heading for the edges in a straight line (instead of the normal meandering route they usually use). But in a week, they were not only back, but practically circling the units. I tried to follow all the tips another review gave, but if anything, things are worse than they were before. I guess I'll try putting these out again in the spring. but not sure why.

Also, I can hear the sound these units make, and I don't like it at all. But I'm real fussy about sounds. I thought it would be like my indoor sonic pest chasers, which are inaudible. These seem to work well, since I have had no indoor pests since I installed them (years). Before, well we won't talk about that.

Summary: It worked almost instantly!
Comment: I tried a lot of other things (non-harmful) for my gopher problem and nothing worked. I have not had a single gopher hole since I put the Sonic Mole Chaser in the garden. I did not have to wait several days, the gophers disappeared instantly!

Summary: Works Great!
Comment: I had tried all the other traditional remedies. None of them really seemed to work ... possibly because I do not have the self-discipline to dedicate the ongoing effort required to keep them up.

... until I bought one of these. Now, the only time I see a mole is when the batteries run down ... seem to last about 2 months -- so if I can have the self discipline to change the batteries every 6 weeks or so, I am clear. I have been using these for at least 5 years.

The 'suitability' considerations are:

1) They work better in denser, semi-moist soils than dry, light soils (better sound transmission). Dry sand is not so good -- but then again, moles may not be so common in dry sandy soil either. Pockets of dry sand in your yard can block trensmission across the sand pocket.
2) The unit needs to be in FULL contact with the earth; it cannot be loose in its hole (pack earth around it and water-in if necessary)
3) Large obstructions such as concrete footings, septic tanks, driveways, large planters, ponds, possible large trees, etc will block or attenuate the sound transmission, so strategic locations are important on both sides of the obstruction.
4) The occasional stalwart mole may try a couple nights in a row to see if it is goes away, or can be defeated. I have never had any stick around (unless the batteries run down)

Editorial Reviews:

Get rid of burrowing rodents who treat your yard as an underground highway and your plants as a free lunch! Buried in your yard, the Sonic Mole Chaser blasts a penetrating pulse that humans and pets won't hear, but which forces moles to pack up and leave. Protects approx. 13,500 square feet for up to six months on four D batteries (not included). Our Solar Mole Repeller works the same way, powered by a solar cell that blends unobtrusively into your landscape. The solar model protects approx. 7,500 square feet and runs on two rechargeable AA batteries, included. Imported.
