Summary: Best Headphones for Under A Hundred Fifty Smackers
Comment: I've had my Grado SR 80's for over 3 years now and cannot imagine life without them.

For years I had used a pair of Sony MDR-somethings until the earphone pads were disintigrating. I had some extra cash and decided to do some research before rushing out and buying a new pair. I was unfamiliar with the Grado brand, but all of the reviews were fantastic for their entire line. But I wasn't really thrilled about an open-ear design, I had been used to closed-ear headphones. Research on a bunch of audiophile sites said that open-ear headphones gave the most natural sound, and the Grado SR 80's were rated the best buy for any headphones under one hundred fifty dollars, better than the more famous Sennheiser brand. Then I kept reading how uncomfortable they were. I hesitated buying them and for over a week I kept reading more Grado reviews. I almost bought some other brand because the reviewers claimed they were more comfortable than the Grado's. I finally found a few reviews that said the newer pads on the Grado's were more comfortable and became even more comfortable after a short break in period, just like the sound quality improves after a few dozen hours of play. So I broke down and ordered them.

The very first time I put the Grado's on I could not believe the sound difference over my old Sony's. It was like listening to the artists in the studio or on a small stage, instead of them in the room next door. There is no muffled or tinny sound. Everything becomes crystal clear. You can pick out individual instruments, hear individual voices in crowds, even the artist breathing. Lyrics become much easier to understand, and my appreciation and enjoyment of music has increased because of the Grado's.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone. And from the websites I've read that while there is a quality boost going to the SR 125's, the sweet spot price wise in the Grado line is with the SR 80's. I encourage you to read up on these, the more you read the more you'll be convinced to buy them.

It would cost ten times more to put together a stereo system and speakers that sound as fantastic as these headphones do.

Pro's -

GREAT Sound, fantastic bass, great for rock, jazz, country, classical, world music, everything I've tried sounds incredible.

Uncomfortable reputation isn't true. Was a tight fit the first couple of times I used them, but they have a metal strip under the top that you can stretch out and then they feel great (if you have a big melon like me).

Very lightweight, I wear them for hours and do not feel a need to take a rest from them.

Much cheaper than any equivalent sounding stereo system.

Cons -

Somewhat large if you wanted to use them as portable headphones with an ipod or other mp3 player.

If you are going to connect it to most stereo systems you will need a mini-to-standard connector. You probably already have on if you've had headphones before. The connector on the headphones is the standard mini size most headphones today are.

What are you waiting for? Get yourself some Grado's!

Summary: Nice after two years!
Comment: Ok, so these cans are ugly and not super confortable (not bad though), so what? They lean more toward a Lola racer than a Rolls. These are a very open, supra-aural, design so they wont protect others from the music. Nor will they protect you from ambient noise, it's just not their job. They are built to sound great without breaking the bank. After all, I use them with portable sources so I don't want to haul around a mint. Many phones nowadays kick-up the bass (to simulate band-pass woofers installed in a teeny-bopper's ride), these don't. All you hear is your music. Very flat and crisp. No colorations. It's very hard to find anything that sounds so transparent with such tight, well defined bass, in this price range. These things love to Rock. The only issue I ever had was a bad plug (I replaced it with a Switchcraft part). Rough around the edges? - Yes, but they sure sound sweet!

Summary: Best Buy Grado Headphones
Comment: I have owned the SR-60 headphones and they had been my reference set. Upon hearing both for a brief audition, I could hear little difference so I decided the SR-60 were the better buy. I also noticed some said the SR-80's needed an amplifier.

I took a chance and bought the SR-80's. After listening for an extended period and burning them in, I have to say I can tell a difference in performance from the SR-60's. As advertised, the SR-80's have better base response and a more open sound stage. In terms of appearance (up close) there is little difference with the SR-80's having an opening for the drivers in the ear cup and a thicker padding. This gives it an overall more "sturdy" look than the SR-60.

I would say the SR-80's are worth the extra $26 you pay over the SR-60, but both are a great buy. They are both excellent values and the best I have heard in their price range. The SR-80's sound fine without an amplifier, though I am sure a high quality amplifier improves the sound. I listen to them from the headphone jack of a high-end CD player (Revox B-226 Signature) and I get excellent performance.

Summary: High Quality Headphones on a budget!
Comment: I bought these a couple weeks ago and I have hardly put them down since. I am a college student so there are many times when I want to be listening to music / movies in my room without distrubing others. Cheap headphones, like the ones that came
with my ipod, certainly didn't cut it. To replace those I had bought some portable in ear monitors about a year ago (Sure E2C), which certainly improved sound quality, but they didn't they weren't really good enough for in room listening (not enough bass ect). I have read for a while in various places how great the grado line of headphones was, and decided to take the leap. With a hard budget of $100 I decided that these would be the most bang for the buck. Needless to say, I am very happy with the decision. The only downside (that isn't necissarily a bad thing)that I have noticed with these headphones is that poorly recorded and old music(that isn't digitally mastered) as well as lower bitrate MP3's (128 and down) are much more noticable with these than with cheaper headphones. It also did seem that, like all good headphones, the SR80's needed some "break in" time to reach their full potential. So take it into account that they won't sound their best right out of the box.

Summary: Cans that can!
Comment: The best bang for your buck! I'm transferring my records to CDs and the SR80's not only helped me match the digital sound to the original analog sound, but I'm also hearing things I never heard when I first played my albums!

Editorial Reviews:

The SR80 utilizes a 4 conductor connecting cable and larger ear cushions, the result of which gives a more open stage. The SR80 provides an improved bass resonance, which enhances the overall detail. John Grado says he strove for the best sounding phones for the money, and with the glowing reviews the SR80's have received, who can argue.PRODUCT FEATURES: Vented diaphragm; Non-resonant air chamber; Standard copper voice coil wire; Standard copper connecting cord; Mini plug with 1/4" adaptor.
