Summary: A Small Price to Pay for Sanity
Comment: I've had a pair of these for about two 1/2 years - during which I've racked up over 150,000 miles of air travel. I thank these earphones for my sanity.
I see other guys wrestle with the Bose or other big headphones that, in the case of the bose, are so overpriced that it's ridiculous. But forget the price - the convenience factor and sound quality are what sell these things. You simply will not believe how good these sound - they are an incredible piece of technology. I'm very happy with the sound quality.
While they are not noise cancelling, they do an excellent job of blocking out the crying baby two rows back or the jabering vacationers sitting in your row. They are at least as good if not better than the noice cancelling headphones in this regard. I use these at home too when I want to zone out to some Rhapsody streams while my wife watches tv in the adjoining room.
Anyway, I've tried the bose and no doubt they have great sound as well but what a burden to haul those things around. And they are way over-priced. I travel with enough stuff that I don't want to have a big bulky case of headphones adding to the weight and bulk of my travel gear.
Some people just don't like having the ear buds that go into your ear and want the external type headphones - just know that these really do go into your ear. If you don't mind that, I think these are awesome. And I never leave home without them.

Summary: Love the product, hate the lifespan
Comment: Over the past three years, I've owned several pairs of Etymotic ER-6s.
I won't try to sway you on their sound quality; some people love them, others don't. I've never had a complaint in that regard. The customer service I've received from the company has been consistently exemplary.
They do have one fatal flaw, and it's the reason I've stopped using them. Unlike the more expensive ER-4s, they're too small to remove from your ear without pulling a bit on the cable.
If you use your ER-6s daily, this cable strain will destroy them within a year or so. In effect, you're not buying a set of earphones, but a subscription that you'll have to renew almost annually with an expensive replacement pair. Unlike Shure, Etymotic charges nearly the full retail price (about $80) for an out-of-warranty replacement.
So, as much as I've enjoyed my ER-6s, I'm afraid I can't recommend them here until Etymotic fixes this design flaw.

Comment: Sound is excellent, beyond reproach, really excellent. Service is excellent, mine failed, Etymotic fixed without complaint. Not so happy with having to replace Filters when earwax fills headphones. Buyers should be aware of this necessity. All around good, though.

Summary: Great Headphones and Great Value
Comment: These headphones cancel out much of the noise you would get from ordinary headphones--you do, however, hear your breathing and the cord creates some sound when it moves around as well, but it isn't noticable while listening to music. They're really good for people like me who live in a noisy apartment complex and can't sleep or study because of all the noise from the neighbors above and the people shouting outside. I use them when sleeping, studying, and working on multimedia projects.
They do take some getting used to, but once you do, you'll be glad you bought them. The sound quality is really good and they are fairly durable and small enough to carry around in your pocket without much worry. They also come with a pouch; so if you're one of those people who is worried about destroying things, then you can keep them in the pouch. Overall-great headphones and well worth the money.

Summary: ER6 - A disappointment
Comment: As I was researching for noise cancellation headphones I came across a very favorable review for the Etymotic ER6 Isolator. The review impressed so much I ordered a pair immediately. Unfortunately, these did not live up to my expectations. While sound quality is good at low volume these headphones distort at moderate volume levels. I expect that bass response in headphones have always disappointed me but the bass response in these is poorer than average. Once again, the problem is distortion at moderate volume levels.
Second, these headphones are excellent at eliminating background noises. However, this is a double edge sword. On the one hand ALL moderate background noise is eliminated when you are listening to music. YOU CAN'T HEAR A THING. The headphone lives up to its "Isolator" name. It truly isolates you from background noise. Then again, that's the problem. I can see my wife making comments but I can't hear a thing she is saying. Some men might welcome this but any wise married man knows this is not a good thing.
Overall, I can live with the convenience of these ultra small headphones that can easily fit in my briefcase. However, I plan to get another pair that gives better sound performance.
