Customer Rating: Summary: Needs replacement ear sleeves Comment: I won't comment on the sound quality other than they sound great. With the right sleeve, they're great in blocking out environment noise. They're not ideal for running, since you can hear them moving in your ear everytime your foot lands.
The cord is not a smooth plastic type - they stick a little to themselves, which can make it difficult to untangle in a hurry.
The reason I only rate it 4 stars is because the replacement sleeves are impossible to find. One of mine dropped out after about 4 weeks and I couldn't find it. I tried the Shure PA757M available at Amazon, but they're much stiffer. I used the medium sized sleeves (the one the Sennheiser came fitted with) and they're soft, comfortable, and fits well. The Shure medium sized sleeves are much stiffer, doesn't fit as well, and (consequently) doesn't block out as much sound. Perhaps the small sleeves might fit better but I'm reluctant to buy a 10 pack to find out.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not so good for walking/jogging Comment: I bought the CX 300S earbuds to use with my portable MP3 player while walking/jogging. The rubberized cord tends to stick/cling to your clothing which results in the buds getting yanked out of your ears as your clothing moves around (not to mention the fact that the cord is a little too short.) The buds must be fully inserted into your ear canal in order to hear the full fidelity of the music. With the buds fully inserted, most of the outside sounds are silenced... but this has the effect of amplifying inside (in-body) sounds such as breathing, teeth chattering, swallowing, etc... as well as the sound that the cord makes as it rubs around. Also, as the air moves past your head (while walking) you'll notice very pronounced wind noise! I also noticed that once you get the buds properly fitted, then you smile at someone, the buds tend to pop out! No more smiling!
Now, let me say that if I'm sitting at my desk with the buds properly fitted, the sound is amazing. Very good fidelity with bright highs and nice bass. But, to fully enjoy your music, you'll need to sit perfectly still and breathe gently (and don't touch the cord!)
If you're skeptical about the amplified internal body sounds, try this experiment: take your index fingers and gently press them into your ear canals... not all the way in as to fully plug your ears, but gently about 2/3's of the way in. This is about where the buds will sit when inserted. Now, gently tap your teeth, or take a deep breath. Take your thumbs and rub your index fingers... you get the idea.
I know that this is not a defect with the Sennheisers... this is an inherit problem with anything that you'd stick into your ear canal. And I've now learned that I absolutely hate in-canal phones... very, uncomfortable and inconvenient (and I've recently learned that in-ear phones can cause hearing loss.)
I am switching back to my Koss KSC75 Portable Stereophone Headphones which sound amazing. And they're so comfortable that you might forget that you're wearing them.
Bottom line: If you're a fan of in-ear buds, then I recommend the CX 300S's... they do sound very good when properly worn. Since most of my gripes are with in-ear buds in general, I cannot fault Sennheiser nor the CS 300S's. I rate them only 4 stars because the rubberized cord is annoying and it's a bit too short.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great sound, very good quality Comment: This is an amazing piece of hardware. This is the first in-ear phones I have, and they feel good. Sound is perfect. As always, Sennheiser delivers another good product for a small price. This is my second Sennheiser, and I am not disappointed (I have a HD202 that I use on my desktop).
Make sure you try all fitting rubbers. It can be a little awkward to find the right fit, specially if this is the first time you use in-ear phones. Once you find the right size, sound is great, phones stay put in the ear, no matter what.
I'd buy it again. Make sure you get them when Amazon has it on sale for $39.99
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Value for Money. Good sound isolation Comment: CX-300 is one of the latest products in Sennheiser's wide line of headphones. Its raison d'etre is 'ambient noise attenuation' in Sennheiser's words. Of course they are meant to be used with portable devices and do just fine at that.
Exactly how good is the noise attenuation?
Sennheiser says 'excellent', but surely you would want a more unbiased opinion. The noise attenuation is certainly good enough. I have tried them in the Athens Underground Railway (Metro). It is so noisy when the train moves, that with common closed headphones, it is impossible to hear the music at a volume that won't impair your hearing. With the CX-300 a lot of the noise is shut out, so you can enjoy your music at a reasonable volume. Another measure of comparison is that you can't hear a person that is near you speak, unless they shout. That is what these headphones were meant to do.
If you don't want or simply don't need noise reduction, you can buy just as good or even better headphones at a cheaper price. For example Sennheiser's PX and HD series, and AKG's K24 and K26.
Obviously for this price you can't buy high fidelity. The sound quality is up to Sennheiser's standards of course. I am using these with my Sony HD-5 mp3 player and haven't got any complaints. When I am not in the subway I usually go with Sennheiser's PX-200. I haven't made a real head to head comparison, but I think they are more or less a match on sound quality. So obviously, you can get better sound at home with quality speakers or quality bulky headphones.
These headpones don't silence everything. If you want that you can try 'active noise reduction' headphones (Bose, Sennheiser, AKG), but the active noise reduction process introduces artificial artifacts into the sound and the headphone are a bit expensive. You can also try Shure's or Etymotics passive noise reduction headphones which are a 'professional' choice (you can remove the quotation marks for Shure);they were (initially) meant for artists on stage. But you have to pay a hefty price tag for those.
So to sum up, if you want something which 1)shuts out unwanted noise 2)gives quite good sound quality, and 3) doesn't feel like wearing a helmet, these are an excellent choice at their price.
If you can pay more, you can get more in at least two of the three criteria.
Customer Rating: Summary: excellent. Comment: I have never used in-ear earphones before, but after putting up with earphones that dont stay in your ear for the past 5 years, i finally turned to these.
I wasn't sure what to expect for the sound, and boy, was i surprised. These things sound amazing. I never knew such small and discreet earphones could produce such a rich full sound WITH bass. Also, the noise-cancelling technology is amazing. With just regular earphones if seems like all the surrounding sounds are alongside witht he music coming out of your earphones. With these, although they dont compeltely seal out ALL sound, it distinguishes the music your lsitening to from ourside noise exceptionally well. I'm even able to hear my music clearly thorugh the loud chatterings of a high-school cafeteria.
The fit is amazing. I can leave it in for hours, walking or sitting, and it wont fall out, not even once. I sue the meidum-sized bud. The smaller oen is too small and doesnt amke a good seal around ym ear canal and falls out. I can use the large one, in fact, it has a better sound, but it starts hurting after a while. It WILL feel werird for the first few days. You have to get used to putting them in the right way as well as the 'inside' noise you'll hear (i'm sur eevryone who has used in-ear earphones know what i mean), but give it time and everything will be fine.
Concerning cord, i'm actually liking the design as it allows me to put the cord behind my head so it doesnt act as an obstruction when im working on something. I'm not sure if this was intended, but oh well.
All in all, these earphones are the best i have ever used in my life. They are definitely worth the price.
