Summary: This is a good movie, Brosnan is great
Comment: The Matador is about a hit man named Julian Noble(Pierce Brosnan) who meets Danny Wright(Greg Kinnear) a business man trying to land a crucial deal.

This movie is good because while the story follows the standard buddy flick structure, the characters respond and behave in the opposite manner. Julian is far from 007, he obnoxius and tactless. And while Danny isn't necessarily for murder, it's not often that the guy the Hit Man drags along has to convince the weeping Assassin to finish the job.

Pierce Brosnan really makes this movie, his performance is hillarious(though not in that Laugh out Loud type of way). Some might not like his character though, because Julain is a real slob(there was another word I had in mind, but I don't think Amazon would like it so much). Greg Kinnear is great too, and it's cool to see these guys relationship start rather rough and end as something neither will forget.

The Matador is a comedy and a character study. It's not over the top comedy(not that there is anything wrong with that) and the character aspects aren't as deep as other more dedicated films, but that's not a fair comparison. What's cool about this movie is that it brings originality to the rather stale action/comedy genre.

Just a note, This DVD has those unskippable ads some people despise so much. When you first put it in and if you stop it you have to watch them again.

Summary: Very good movie; very bad DVD
Comment: IF YOU ARE A MOVIE NUT, YOU WILL WANT TO WAIT FOR THE SPECIAL ADDITION WHICH IS BOUND TO COME OUT IN A FEW MONTHS.

This DVD is the epitome of the evil that film studios do.

The DVD starts out with coming attractions. They last about 10 minutes. There is absolutely no way to skip them. You must sit through them to get to the movie. You can't fast foward through them or jump to the menu. If you watch the movie halfway through and shut off your DVD player and come back, you have to sit through those coming attractions again.

I must admit 2 things: my experience was with a rental copy. I don't know if this copy for sale has the same problem. You can get around the coming attractions if your DVD player has a bookmark feature. But, you must be sure it is set before you put the DVD in.

The DVD has no special features. It doesn't bother me, since I am not into special features like "making of" or commentary. But, some movie nuts will be disappointed. In about 6 months there will probably be a new DVD with all kinds of extras.

This is a very good movie, in the 4 to 5 star range. It has a very good and interesting story and the acting is great throughout.

The story is about the relationship of an aging hitman and an average business man. Pierce Brosnan is great as the amoral hitman. Greg Kinear is very good as the average joe, with some very real nuanced nerd tendencies.

This is a black comedy. It is not hilarious as some have said, but it does have a few funny part.

Although it is about a hitman, it is not an action movie. There is only one explosion, and there are no on screen killings. There is no blood, or car chases. It is a character study.

EVERYONE WANTS TO BE A MOVIE CRITIC. MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO WRITE THESE THINGS SAW THE MOVIE IN A THEATRE AND HAVE NOT SEEN A COPY OF THE DVD. THAT IS WHY YOU RARELY SEE A REVIEW TALK ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH THE DVD.

Summary: Jameson Thottam bullish on The Matador
Comment: Jameson Thottam bullish on The Matador

I loved this movie, and I wasn't alone. We thought the writing was superb, the acting fabulous, and the story quirky and wonderful. When it started, I thought it was going to be vulgar and boring. In fact, you can't make any predictions about how this movie is going to play out - I laughed out loud. Thank the gods I didn't read the negative members reviews. Jameson Thottam just wanted to give it a cheer, and tell you to give it a try with an open mind.

OK, Pierce Brosnan can play a slightly more complex character than James Bond. Brosnan and Greg Kinnear work well together according to Jameson Thottam. Brosnan plays an original character to the hilt... Boozed out - burnt out assassin. Pierce was wonderful as the aging assasin whose only real friend was a man whom he met over margaritas. What a great drink! Greg did a super job as the straight man who gets a little nookie with the attractive, loving wifey.

Nice to see the married folks (like Jameson Thottam) on screen getting a little action. Like a great indy, you're still not entirely sure what happened to whom and when. Great movie - classic "F-word" scene.

Perhaps men can relate more to this film; I enjoyed it but my wife was not impressed, and we usually agree. I enjoyed the locations shots, the story and I thought the performances were very good. It's not a comedy but it is amusing and delivers a heartfelt ending.

Summary: murder, most boring
Comment: Too much talk, not enough rock.

I'm surprised by how much people liked this movie. I had high expectations, but this paled in comparison to the similarly buddy-triangle-assassin film, The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and I thought that was just an "OK," movie.

If you like jokes about pederasty and having sex with children, this might be for you...

Summary: MATADOR GORED BY WIMPY ENDING
Comment: MATADOR was going along very well and then just seemed to die. It is as if the script writer or writers just couldn't figure out how to end this movie. Even as a parody of a movie about a hit man (Pierce Brosnan), it has one of the wimpiest endings I've seen. Until the last half hour, however, we have here a pretty good film. Mr. Brosnan plays a zany contract killer and his effort in MATADOR reminds me of George Clooney's off-the-wall performance in O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? The same focus on odd hair, loony smile and absurd speechifying. It is a terrific performance by Brosnan, who adopts a regular citizen (Greg Kinnear) as his friend and brings him into his sinister world. This is a kind of buddy flick with women playing peripheral roles. MATADOR has slick production values and is quite entertaining. Until the last half hour, that is. One will need to overlook some ideas about contract killing that might disturb if taken out from the dark of the theater and examined in the light of morality.

Editorial Reviews:

Pierce Brosnan gives one of his finest performances in The Matador, a low-key buddy comedy with an agreeably sinister twist. Light-years from his former James Bond image, Brosnan is unshaven, unnerved and unpredictable as freelance assassin Julian Noble, who encounters desperate businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) in the bar of a modern Mexico City hotel. Danny is intrigued when Julian reveals that he's a "facilitator of fatalities," and his wife "Bean" (Hope Davis) is equally fascinated when Julian shows up unexpectedly, six months later, at Danny's home in Denver. Having lost his touch as a reliable hit-man, Julian needs Danny's help with "one last job," but the logistics of Julian's lethal profession (involving an employer played by Philip Baker Hall) are secondary to writer-director Richard Shepard's offbeat, slightly uneven character study, which gives Kinnear and Brosnan a memorable opportunity to riff on their established screen personas. In making Julian a likable yet tormented drifter who's made a habit of "running from any emotion," Brosnan creates an edgy yet sympathetic character as mysterious as he is fun to be around; if you're going to befriend a hired killer, you could do far worse than a guy like Julian. As Brosnan plays him, he's worthy of a sequel, but The Matador is the kind of entertainingly quirky movie that's a hard act to follow. --Jeff Shannon
