Customer Rating: Summary: Great for frequent travelers Comment: I've had these headphones now for about a month and have used them on a about 6 domestic round trips and 1 international trip from San Franciso to Beijing.
On the long trip, the noise cancelling worked well reducing engine noise. It was noticable and I was able to reduce the volume on my ipod by about 25% when noise cancelling was on. The ear pads only became uncomfortable after about 6 hours of continuous use. About 3 hours of that was wearing the headphones while sleeping.
The benefits of using the headphones on short trips was good as well. I was able to store the headphones and original bulky ipod in the sennheiser provided carying case, which saves a lot of room and fits comfortably in a backpack or briefcase.
Here have been the drawbacks... The pressure on the ear produced by the noise cancelling sometimes bothersome to those who have tried my headphones. I must admit that I notice the pressure change but not enough to bother me. Also, backgroud "hissing" during noise cancelling in quiet environments is also noticable but not to the point of bothersome.
At $110 (circuit city had for $150), these have been a great investment.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice sound quality, two small problems Comment: First off, the sound quality is excellent and there is a marked difference between these headphones versus similar headphones without noise cancellation. My opinion is the quality concern can be put to rest for those of us who don't work in recording studios 40 hours a week. I can use these in coffee shops or at work and hear the music in what I (as a layman) consider to be "deep and rich tones" without the background, so that much is not a problem for me.
One unexpected problem I have is that I get shocked in the ear from time to time from these headphones. It's minor and definitely nothing to be concerned about from a safety standpoint, but it is annoying. I don't know if that "feature" is unique to the particular set that I purchased or if that has anything to do with the audio jack that I am connecting these headphones too. In all fairness, I only remember that happening so far when connected to the audio jack on a particular set of speakers. This only happens about 2-3 times a day and I listen to these almost the entire time I am working.
The other problem I have is the length of the wire leads coming off of the headphones. This configuration is fine for portable, wearable units such as iPods, however they will severely limit your mobility if you are connecting the unit to a desktop or laptop as I often use them for. The battery unit is in between the audio jack and the headphones almost equidistant from each. I often get a yank from turning my head and finding out that I have pulled the battery pack off the table from turning my head. This kind of problem is forgivable for the first week but this problem has worn my enamorment with these headphones a little thin over time. All in all I think these are very nice in both sound quality and attractiveness, but if I had it to do over I might take a look at noise cancellation ear buds instead purely from a practical perspective.
Customer Rating: Summary: GREAT for the plane... Comment: Flying can be VERY loud. For that very reason, I wanted to buy the Bose QuietComfort2, but I'm not rich enough to think spending $300 on earphones (WITHOUT an iPod connected to it) is sane. I reviewed customer reviews on noise canceling headphones for a few days before I decided on the Sennheiser's. I am EXTREMELY happy with my choice, and I can tell you why: 1) they are 1/3 the price of the good Bose; 2) when I was on the plane, the airline offered Bose Headphones (and I think they really are the QuietComfort) and I took them, just for comparison. The Sennheiser's completely blew those out of the water (and to be fair, the Bose given to me on the plane were probably constantly used, thereby affecting their performance). 3) Because the ear piece is round on the Sennheiser, you may wear your earphones in almost any position, however on Bose that is not possible because of the oval shape of the earphone. 4) The earphones didn't disturb me when sleeping. They were very comfortable and stayed on my ears.
I do have 2 complaints though. 1) There isn't a volume control on the `remote' and 2) the remote can not be moved while noise canceling is on, it creates noticeable noise. I probably wouldn't used these on a bus or subway, and I definitely would not use then while working out, but they're perfect for an airplane.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great product Comment: Works great in airplanes. Battery life must be good, I used the same rechargable battery in two 2-hour flights, and it was still going. It is probably a waste using the headphones without noise-calceling turned off, though.
Acceptible audio quality, not quite audiphile grade.
Customer Rating: Summary: not for purists Comment: This is an oversimplification, but still essentially true: The only thing that "filters out noise" is -another noise-. Like when you turn up your air conditioner to drown out street sound. This can be the only way to listen to music in some environments, and if the sound is acceptable, why not? Just be aware that the actual music has been altered to cut through the noise.
