Summary: Don't buy this product!!!!
Comment: I bought these headphones to replace the earbuds for my iPod. The whistling sound in the right earphone grows louder and louder with use. I've notced changing to a new battery helps -- for a while, a short while, then the whistling is back. Pushing in on the outer ear cover really sets off the whistle. especially on the right side. As an engineer, I'd say it's a design problem. As a buyer, these are just another pair of earphones with noise cancelling off, so why not get a pair without that feature and save yourself some money?

Summary: disappointing - 2 sets - 2 failures
Comment: I saw the same problems as others. First set had rumbling in the right ear, and screeching in the right ear whenever I moved around (like walking). The defects seemed to get worse the longer I used them (about a week). I ordered a replacement set and they had extreme rumbling in the left ear right out of the package. Obviously a problem with this model. Stay away from them; save yourself the aggravation. I'll start looking for a different brand/ model now . . .

Summary: Flawed headphones
Comment: I bought these headphones because there were many good reviews on the internet, but i have experienced the same problems as some other users:

The noise canceling function works for about 15 minutes, and then a loud screeching feedback noise starts to get louder and louder. The noise becomes so loud that it is unbearable and on every occasion I have used the headphones I have had to turn off the noise canceling function and continue to use them with the n/c off.

Turning the n/c off and on again doesnt work, and repositioning the headphones (as the manual says to do) doesn't work either.

Without the noise canceling function, the headphones are inferior to many much cheaper models, and the sound in these headphones is nowhere near top quality.

So much for sony quality...

Comment: I bought the headphones to make air travel more pleasant and to be able to hear music and other audio better on commercial flights.
I am very pleased with the units.
They do not, however, cancel out all noise - far from it. They reduce a lot of the low frequencies, where a lot of the aircraft noise is. They made it much easier and comfortable for me to hear the in-flight audio.
They don't do much to cancel out other cabin noise, like people talking and such. The ads for these show people with loudspeakers for heads all around a user, who is sitting there in blissful silence - this is misleading in my opinion.
So don't expect silence. But like I said, it made it much easier for me to hear the in-flight audio without having to crank up the volume and mash the earphones against my ears like I've tried with regular earphones. It also made the flight a little more pleasant even without any audio source plugged in to them.
I like the fact that you can completely remove the cord, too.

Summary: Good for the price
Comment: I've used both the Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones and I just bought a pair of Sony's flagship noise-cancelling headphones, the NC50. I would say that for the price, I would recommend the Sony's over the QC2's. For one, I found that the Bose tended to create some sort of negative pressure which made me want to pop my ears (like in an airplane). Also, the QC2's will not play music without noise-cancellation turned on so if your battery dies, you're out of luck. Not so with the Sony headphones. The NC50 has better passive noise blocking (the padding is stiffer than the Bose to create a better seal). However, this makes them a little bit less comfortable over long periods. I am really liking this monitor button on the side of the Sony's that not only turns off noise-cancellation, but it also mutes your music so you can hear people talking to you (or about you) even though you still have the headphones on. I bought these on eBay for $70 , which makes them less than a quarter of what the Bose QC2's sell for. In all, I'm satisfied and think that they are well worth the price if you can get them for less than retail.

Editorial Reviews:

Small enough to keep with you at all times, and ideal for listening to your favorite music in planes, trains, and automobiles, the Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones significantly reduce outside noise so you can hear music as it's meant to be heard -- without any background noise or interference.

The headphones' noise-canceling circuit reduces ambient noise with a phase-canceling process and provides a noise reduction of 14 dB at 300 Hz. The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones uses tiny, built-in sensors that send equal-but-opposite canceling signals to the headphone drivers. This phase-canceling process "blocks" outside noise and is especially effective on noises like air-conditioners or transportation rumble.

The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones allows you to turn this feature on-and-off with a "Noise Canceling" switch on the headphone housing. The function can run for up to 30 hours on one AAA battery, and with the ability to switch the feature off, you'll be able to conserve your battery life and use noise canceling only when it's needed.

Sony has not scrimped on comfort with the MDR-NC50. These headphones feature an ear-conscious design with soft earpads, an adjustable band to fit nearly any head, and a slim folding style that is perfect for travelers.

What's in the Box
Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones, carrying case, in-flight plug adapter, unimatch plug adapter, and 1.5 meter connecting cord.
