Summary: Beware of Bogus Billing from Kids Discover
Comment: I just received a first-time correspondence from Kids Discover threatening referral to a credit agency for copies of a magazine that we didn't order and haven't received. There is no telephone number to call and only a p.o. box to correspond with. I suspect many people just pay the bill in order to avoid any trouble. I sent a notice to the Consomer Complaint agency in the states involved in order to get this fraud on record.

Summary: No Actually Factual
Comment: This so called magazine has no editors to write to ask for corrections, and is often giving kids very slanted information. For instance in the latest edition, (March 2006), they write, in reference to the Chernobyl accident, " Ten Thousand people died and 135,000 people were evacuated." I got this from Wikipedia: "It is difficult to accurately tally the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl, as most of the expected long-term fatalities, especially those from cancer, have not yet actually occurred, and will be difficult to attribute specifically to the accident. A 2005 IAEA report attributes 56 direct deaths; 47 accident workers and 9 children with thyroid cancer, and estimates that as many as 4,000 people may ultimately die from long term accident-related illnesses."
I looked carefully through the entire magazine but there is no contact information for the editors, and there is no place on their web-site to comment on stories.
If you like left-wing propaganda this is the magazine for you and your kids, otherwise I suggest looking elsewhere.

Summary: Billing Fraud #2
Comment: Our child enjoys, and we enjoy & approve of both National Geographic Kids and Discover Kids. They're so fascinating to read (especially Discover Kids), that the kids forget that they're being educated! HOWEVER...Like the review entitled "Billing Fraud" submitted by Mr. Hunter, I will testify to National Geographic Kids shameless sales tactics...also addressed specifically to our minor child. I fully believe Mr. Hunter's entire report, as we've experienced similar shameless marketing practices from National Geographic Kids. Go to the website. Ask the Customer Service Rep for the name & mailing address of the President & CEO of "The Society". Don't bother with any attempt at discussion, they have canned replies that just go in circles without addressing the immorality and questionable legality of marketing to minors without parental consent. Also ask for the Board of Directors contact info. Write a letter to the CEO, and CC each member of the Board, telling him what you think of their unethical, immoral sales practices which violate our children's privacy and undermine our parental authority to monitor, guide, and supervise our children's exposure to the media, thereby undermining our parental abilities to protect our children. They claim they don't know whether a name & address on a subscription is a child or an adult. They refuse to admit any responsibility to make that determination...they just shamelessly market their publications addressed directly (in the mail) to minors. Their staff, management, Board of Directors, and stockholders should be ASHAMED of themselves! Our child enjoys, and we approve of, National Geographic Kids (and Discover Kids) itself...we're appalled by the "subscription" (ie. "sales") practices. Again, our child enjoys, and we approve of both National Geographic Kids and Discover Kids.

Summary: Great alternative to National Geograpic Kids magazine!
Comment: If you're tired of the ads in NG Kids, check out Kids Discover! It's full of great articles, instead of commercials. This content rich magazine is a favorite in our house.

Summary: What a wonderful magazine!
Comment: For anyone looking for an educational magazine for their child or children, this is it! Each month is a different subject ranging from Mountains to Theodore Roosevelt to Money to Ancient Egypt to Germs. There seems to be a Kids Discover for everything. The first seventeen pages consist of full color photos and drawings and a paragraph or two about each. The final two page contain a project or two, some questions about the material and additional literature on the subject.

I have certainly enjoyed receiving this magazine for the last nine years! I've been getting it since I could read and I still do and every month I learn something new. I love all the pictures and the way it's laid out makes it very easy to take in the information. A couple of paragraphs about every aspect of whatever the subject and pictures galore give you a nice taste, and then if you wish to learn more read one of the suggested books.

A truly wonderful learning tool.
